Community Service Hours

“To teach…the Gospel of Jesus Christ” and to “Create a community where service is valued and celebrated,” are essential components of Bishop Gorman’s Mission.

In the Gospels Jesus makes it very clear that reaching out to the poor and the outcasts of society are crucial elements of the Gospel. Through His own life giving death and resurrection, Jesus witnessed the centrality of giving. Jesus made it clear that we, too, His followers must do the same.

Bishop Gorman is embarking on a new era in the Community Service program.

Beginning with the Class of Class of 2010, the following will be the Community Service requirements:

  1. All students will be required to have completed 100 hours of Community Service before they graduate.
  2. To advance to the next grade:

    A.  Freshmen must complete at least 10 hours of Community Service.
    B.  By the time they complete their Sophomore year, they should have completed a total of at least 30 hours of Community Service. (Freshman and Sophomore years together.)
    C.  By the time they complete their Junior year, they should have completed at least 60 hours of Community Service.
    D.  By the time they complete their Senior year, they should have all 100 hours of Community Service finished.
    E.  If a student completes more than the hours needed during the year, these hours are simply added towards the total of 100. That is, a Freshman will get credit for 30 hours if they did 30 hours and therefore will only need 70 more hours towards graduation.
  3. In support of Bishop Gorman’s ministry to others, all students are required to assist at Matthew’s Closet at least once during their Gorman experience.

For the Classes of 2008 and 2009 (Juniors and Seniors) the following is required:

  1. Each year they are to complete 20 hours of Community Service in order to proceed to the next grade (or, to graduate for Seniors).
  2. These hours will no longer be part of the Religion Grade.

For all students:

  1. Community Service Forms can be obtained from Religion Teachers, Campus Ministry or athttp://www.fred.com/service_hours_report_sheet.htm .
  2. A Student may do Community Service during the Summer months.
  3. Community Service hours should be turned into Campus Ministry.
  4. Completed Service Hours may be checked on Edline anytime.  Edline Private Reports will have Service Hours listed under Demographics. Any questions regarding Service Hours should be directed to Campus Ministry.
  5. Again, students will not be permitted to proceed to the next grade unless they have completed their Community Service hours.

Bishop Gorman is excited in moving the Community Service program along and we are developing opportunities in Campus Ministry to help facilitate our new programs. More information will be shared throughout the year.

Matthew's Closet - 2000 South Maryland Parkway

This outreach ministry is solely operated by Bishop Gorman. It is part of a students Community Service requirement that they work at Matthew’s Closet at least once during their Gorman experience.

Matthew's Closet is our clothing outreach for the homeless in the Las Vegas area, and it is furnished and staffed entirely by the Bishop Gorman community.
We are always collecting clothing to distribute to those in need.  We especially need casual clothing: Jeans pants and shoes, especially men's sized pants and tennis shoes are in great demand.   Please check your closets and drawers for such casual items! As always, there is an ongoing need for new socks and underwear and toiletry
Students interested in helping with this activity must have a PERMISSION SLIP turned in before being allowed to attend.

We would love to create a parent ministry that will help keep the closet going.  Please call the school and ask to speak to Nan Sullivan in Campus Ministry if you feel you are called to serve that way.

If you are interested or need more information, please stop in Campus Ministry.

Matthew's Closet operates on
THURSDAYS, from 3:00-5:00 p.m.
